The term 'refuge', of Latin origin, evokes a place of asylum, shelter, or protection. Figuratively, it represents a moment, feeling, community, or person that provides peace and security in difficult times. In this context, 'El Refugio' is presented as an innovative project for neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism, ADHD, or high abilities.
The main objective of this movement, founded by Elías Merino, is to offer a space where neurodivergent people can rest from the need to mask their identity and connect with others who share similar experiences. The initiative seeks to change the perception and place of neurodivergent individuals in society.
The first action of 'El Refugio', named 'La Hoguera' (The Bonfire), will take place at the Royal Botanical Garden. It will be a gathering where participants share their stories, recognize themselves in others' experiences, and enjoy hours without the pressure of hiding who they are to fit in. It is conceived as a safe space for belonging, pride, and shared narrative, reminding attendees that they are not 'broken' nor alone.
The director of the Royal Botanical Garden-CSIC, María Paz-Martín, will inaugurate the event. Since 2022, the RJB has been working on the project 'Accessible Garden', in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT-MICIU), to promote diversity and inclusion in scientific outreach, opening its doors to all of society.
Over the years, the RJB has developed specific programs for various groups, such as 'Empower Parents' and the Spanish Sign Language interpreter service, as well as projects like 'PequeZine Natural', focused on individuals with ASD. This was explained by the director of the RJB-CSIC.
Elías Merino expressed gratitude for the Royal Botanical Garden's involvement, highlighting the location's symbolism for their cause. During the event, details will be shared about the first film created entirely by neurodivergent individuals, also titled 'El refugio', with its public premiere to be announced soon.
