Starting this Thursday, Madrid's subway system is introducing 40 new cooling units distributed across 20 key stations on Lines 1 and 5. The primary objective is to cool the platforms, thereby significantly enhancing the experience for both passengers and employees during the summer months, especially in anticipation of rising temperatures.
The decision to activate these devices earlier responds to advance warnings received about a notable increase in temperatures. This initiative marks the third consecutive summer that Metro de Madrid is implementing this measure to mitigate the effects of heat on its public transport network.
The water-based units will operate automatically between 11:30 AM and 9:30 PM. Activation will occur whenever the outside temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius or when the State Meteorological Agency issues official heatwave alerts.
On Line 1, the new cooling units will be operational at the following stations: Sol, Chamartín, Alvarado, Iglesia, Antón Martín, Estación del Arte, Atocha, Puente de Vallecas, Buenos Aires, and Alto del Arenal.
Meanwhile, Line 5 will feature this technology at the stations of Callao, Alonso Martínez, Gran Vía, Chueca, Ópera, Diego de León, Núñez de Balboa, La Latina, Puerta de Toledo, and Acacias.
Additionally, throughout the summer months, Metro de Madrid intensifies periodic checks of the air conditioning systems on all trains. In the event of a breakdown, trains are immediately transferred to repair workshops, with a commitment to return them to service within a maximum of twenty-four hours.
As a complementary measure to maintain the interior temperature of the train cars, the automatic door opening function will be deactivated. Passengers will need to manually open the doors, which will help reduce the loss of cooled air on the platforms and inside the carriages.
