The Madrid City Council, in collaboration with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), has announced a special leisure initiative for citizens to enjoy the Spanish National Team's games during the World Cup. The main novelty will be the installation of a giant screen in the iconic Plaza de Colón, which will serve as the focal point for Madrid's fanbase.
The deputy mayor and spokesperson for the municipal government, Inma Sanz, detailed that the Colón screen will start welcoming fans next Monday, coinciding with the national team's debut in the competition. To ensure respect for local residents' rest, broadcasts will be limited to matches starting before 10:00 PM, thus avoiding public order issues in the Salamanca District.
The Madrid City Council's plans include expanding viewing areas as the tournament progresses. If the Spanish National Team qualifies for the quarterfinals, a second phase of the operation will be activated. To accommodate the growing number of fans, a second giant screen will be installed on the Puente del Rey esplanade, within the Madrid Río park area.
“"We are convinced that the team will be among the best in the tournament, offering Madrileños an accessible and festive alternative to enjoy the beautiful game outdoors."
