The Madrid City Council has designed an extensive cultural program titled 'Madrid in the Generation of '27', which will commence at the end of this year and extend throughout 2027. The initiative will feature over a hundred events spanning theater, film, music, dance, and exhibitions, aiming to honor the legacy of this influential literary group.
During the project's presentation, held at the iconic 27 Club of the Hotel Palace, the delegate for Culture, Tourism, and Sport, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, emphasized the Generation of '27's significance to Madrid's cultural memory. "We want to celebrate it with a program worthy of its legacy," she stated, adding that the initiative will position Madrid as "the great international stage for the remembrance and vindication of those unforgettable authors."
The theater program includes notable in-house productions and the revival of classic texts. The Fernán Gómez Theatre - Cultural Centre of the City will premiere 'La profanación de Don Juan. Delirio de Buñuel, Dalí y Lorca' (October 2026) and will host 'Doña Rosita la soltera' (February-March 2027) and the monologue 'Doña Jimena Díaz de Vivar, gran señora de todos los deberes' (March-April 2027).
For its part, the Español Theatre will present 'Yerma' (October-December 2026), followed by 'La casa de Bernarda Alba' and 'Bodas de sangre'. Subsequently, it will offer the adaptation of 'El eslabón perdido' by Luisa Carnés (February-April 2027) and 'Al margen' by Victorina Durán (April-May 2027), concluding the cycle with 'La tumba de Antígona' by María Zambrano (June-July 2027).
Other venues such as Nave 10 Matadero will host the intervention '27 Generation Tour' (January 2027), while the Matadero Dance Centre will celebrate the gala 'Los nuevos flamencos bailan 27' (April 2027) and premiere 'Poemas para un cuerpo' (May 2027), in addition to welcoming the Malandain Ballet Biarritz (December 2027).
Avant-garde performances will be featured at Contemporánea Condeduque with 'Lorca y Gómez de la Serna: performers' (January 2027) and 'Réquiem por la Generación del 27' (March 2027). The Teatro Circo Price will present the acrobatic show 'Los amigos de Pamplinas' (May 2027), and the Reina Sofía Higher School of Music will offer a concert of 'Spanish Music in the Times of the Generation of '27' (first quarter of 2027).
The Cineteca Madrid will dedicate two cycles: 'La otra Generación del 27', focusing on humorists (February 2027), and 'Viajando a la luna: la generación del 27 y el cine' (April 2027). The Institut Français and the Cultural Institute of Mexico will organize a cycle on Luis Buñuel (March 2027), and Casa de América will celebrate '27 en América: exilio, memoria y creación' (October 2027).
The visual arts and bibliography will also have their space. The Museum of Contemporary Art will inaugurate the exhibition '27×27: Ramón Gómez de la Serna and the Avant-Garde Generation' (March 2027). The Liria Palace will display historical first editions in 'The Generation of '27 in the Liria Palace Library' (May-August 2027), and the Municipal Printing Press will showcase bibliographical gems such as 'Cal y Canto' and 'Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías' throughout 2027.
The municipal library network will organize children's workshops, reading clubs, and a poetry recital on World Poetry Day (March 21, 2027). As a preview, the Hotel Palace will launch a monthly series of literary talks starting this September.
