Lavapiés is preparing to celebrate the San Lorenzo festivities, taking over from the San Cayetano celebrations and marking the start of August's street parties in Madrid. From Saturday, August 8th, to Tuesday, August 11th, the neighborhood will become the epicenter of traditional celebrations, offering concerts, popular activities, and religious events before the Virgen de la Paloma festivities commence.
Plaza de Arturo Barea will serve as the main stage for the program, which includes concerts, children's shows, cultural proposals, and events honoring the saint. The opening day, Saturday, August 8th, will feature the second edition of the water battle between 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM. That night, the tribute band La Penúltima Sabinera will perform, followed by Los Vinagres, Metroolé, and Lotus on subsequent days. All days will offer children's shows at 8:00 PM, traditional performances, and DJ sets.
Beyond music, the festivities will extend throughout the neighborhood with activities such as children's painting and toy recycling workshops on Calle de Argumosa, and popular games, comic and graphic novel readings, and craft workshops on Calle del Doctor Fourquet. Calle del Olivar will host the traditional popular lemonade, and the artistic intervention on bollards titled 'Bolardo voy, bolardo vengo' will once again bring color to the streets of Amparo, Sombrerete, and Caravaca.
Monday, August 10th, will be marked by religious events. The church of San Lorenzo will hold a mass at 7:00 PM, followed by the traditional procession of the saint at 8:00 PM. The celebrations will conclude on Tuesday, August 11th, with a concert by Lotus and the seventh edition of the Concurso de Chotis Virgen de la Paloma in the square of the same name.
