The Community of Madrid presented this Thursday in Puerta del Sol a striking art installation designed to raise public awareness about the importance of responsible water use. The work, titled Blue Planet, Water Planet?, is part of a special program organized by the Canal Foundation to celebrate its 25th anniversary, which is itself part of the commemoration of the 175 years of the Canal de Isabel II.
The Minister of Environment, Agriculture, and Interior, Carlos Novillo, presided over the opening of this installation, which will be on display until July 19th in one of the capital's busiest locations. Novillo emphasized that water "is the most important element we have in life" and praised the artists for "showing us the beauty of nature right in the center of Madrid."
The piece features a large-format anamorphic illustration, spanning 97.2 square meters painted directly onto the pavement, utilizing a 3D optical effect technique. Designed to be viewed from a specific vantage point, it invites visitors to interact with it using their mobile devices, encouraging them to share their experience on social media with the hashtags #PlanetaAgua and #CadaGotaCuenta.
The installation depicts a large sinkhole containing spheres illustrating the total volume of water on Earth and the amount available for human consumption, aiming to highlight that this resource is "valuable and limited." The Canal Foundation initiative seeks to bring culture and environmental education to the public through innovative and accessible formats.
The Regional Government has reaffirmed the Community of Madrid's commitment to efficient water management, acknowledging the role of the Canal de Isabel II over its 175-year history in ensuring supply with a model internationally recognized for its technical excellence.
