Francisco Martín, Government delegate in Madrid, highlighted the importance of coordinated work between public administrations and called for citizen prudence regarding the upcoming solar eclipse on August 12. Thirty municipalities from the Sierra Norte de Madrid participated in the first of four meetings convened to plan the necessary security measures.
Martín urged attendees and citizens to "heed the instructions given by official services," both for health reasons, "with adequate protection" to view the sun, and for mobility, "by going to the official points determined" to manage crowd flow and potential incidents.
It was recalled that the event date coincides with the high-risk fire season, so attendees were asked to avoid leaving waste and not to stop in unauthorized areas that could obstruct evacuation routes from observation points.
Public administrations will work in coordination to ensure security, mobility, and civil protection for this challenge. The Government Delegation has scheduled three more meetings in El Molar, Collado Villalba, and Alcalá de Henares, following Instruction 4/2026 from the Secretary of State for Security.
At this first meeting, held at the Espacio Buitrago (former Telefónica Satellite Communications Center), the delegate was accompanied by Javier Robles and Fabián Bejarano, heads of Citizen Security and Civil Protection for the Delegation, along with representatives from State Security Forces and Corps, the General Directorate of Traffic, the Community of Madrid, and local police forces.
A total of 93 municipalities in the Community of Madrid will have high visibility of the eclipse. The aim is to gather forecasts and plan an adequate mobility and security operation for the expected massive mobilization of citizens.
Attendees were able to visit the Espacio Buitrago, built in 1967 and declared a Site of Cultural Interest. This communications station played a key role in 20th-century science history, serving as a link with NASA during the Apollo missions. It ceased operations in 2003 and currently functions as a corporate center for events and training for Telefónica.
